Find your Ugly Doll
Imagine my surprise when my 8 year old son, who abhors anything girly, pleaded with me to get him an ugly doll.
A what?
I guess I've been under a rock for a few months. I didn't know what an ugly doll was. But I do now!
So, it was his birthday and his grandma sent cash, so we bought one big Ugly Doll and 3 little ones (aka Little Uglies). They are not easy to find nor are they cheap! But after looking at them, I've decided they would be easy to make. This site will add free-hand patterns to help you create your own version of an UglyDoll. And we have shopping resources for you to find your own Ugly Doll if you would like to purchase one.
What are Ugly Dolls you ask?
Here is some Ugly History
Uglydolls, who's motto is 'Cuteness and ugliness have never had such a good relationship', are a collection of designer toys created by independent toy designers David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim. Uglydolls were first released in 2002, and are distinguished by an aesthetic that balances traditional cuteness with ugliness. In 2006, Uglydolls were awarded the Specialty Toy of the Year award by the Toy Industry of America.
All of a sudden, Uglydolls are stylish. The first Uglydolls were 12" plush, handmade by Sun-Min Kim in 2002. Now there are 7" Little Uglys, 24" Giant Uglys, 4" plush keychains, and 7" vinyl Uglys. Although the Ugly dolls are still handmade, they are now made in mainland China. Since they are handmade, each doll features slight variations, enhancing the appearance of uniqueness. Each doll also includes a small tag describing the character's distinctive persona.
Uglydolls are primarily sold at independent and specialty toy retailers, rather than in mainstream outlets. Recently, they have appeared at more mainstream retailers such as Nordstrom, Urban Outfitters and other large national chains.
